Kushinagar

Kushinagar, located in Uttar Pradesh, India, is a sacred Buddhist pilgrimage site. It is believed to be the place where Lord Buddha attained Mahaparinirvana (final liberation).

History

Kushinagar has a long and important history. Long ago, it was part of the Malla Kingdom. According to Buddhist stories, Gautama Buddha gave his last teaching here and then passed away around 483 BCE. Later, Emperor Ashoka built stupas and temples to remember Buddha. But as time passed, people slowly forgot about the history. Many years later, in the 19th century, British archaeologists found it again.
